Joseph Worby

DIED AMONG FRIENDS.

A letter from
Tularosa, New Mexico, to the children of the late Joseph II. Worby, who died there on July 8, states that the deceased was taken sick on Friday, July 3d. It was a very warm day, and Mr. Worby worked rather hard during the morning, and it is thought drank too much water. He became ill during the afternoon, but remained on the ranch until morning. He then went to town, four miles distant, to consult his friend, Dr. Long, but nothing could be done to check his illness, and he died on Wednesday and was buried by the Grand Army post. He remained at Tularosa from Saturday until his death, and was made as comfortable as possible by friends. Some one will be sent from here to close up his affairs in New Mexico and bring the body home.

Ann Janette Worby

Mrs. Ann Janette Worby, a resident of Wisconsin since early days, who came from a pioneer American family, died at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. W. Vaughan, 1417 Main street, where she had lived the past 10 years. Her death was caused by a general breaking down of her health. She had been confined in bed for four weeks and her condition was critical during that time.

Mrs. Worby, whose maiden name was Ann Janette Whitaker, was born at Sacketts Harbor, N. Y., on February 29, 1840. She remained there until 16 years of age when the family came to Winnebago county and located at Oshkosh, where they lived for two years. They then removed to the town of Plover. Mrs. Worby's father, the late William Whitaker, was an early day resident of the Maine neighborhood. Her marriage to William Tate of
that district took place in 1859. Mr. Tate died of measles, in camp, after a year of service in the Civil war.

In 1866 the widow married Joseph H. Worby, also a Civil war soldier who had been in the service for four years. He was a local resident at the time of their marriage but they immediately located at Iola, where the family lived for 40 years. Mr. Worby was engaged in blacksmithing for a time but his health did not permit him to continue in this occupation, as the result of wounds he had sustained in the war, and he subsequently became a salesman and a mail carrier. He had a star route from Iola to Stevens Point, using a team when the roads were open and at other times covering the distance on foot. The journey one way often required two days to complete. Mr. Worby went to New Mexico to establish a government claim and his death occurred it Tula Rosa in that state on July 8, 1906. His remains were brought back to Iola. Mrs. Worby made her home during the next 12 years with a daughter, Mrs.
Florence Smith at Clintonville and Oshkosh, and for the last 10 years had lived with Mr. and Mrs- Vaughan here.

She is survived by the following daughters and sons: Mrs. Nellie Vaughan, city; Mrs. Rettle Taylor, Everett, Wash.; E. M. Worby, New London; Charles E. Worby. Milwaukee; Mrs. Mable Larson, Omro; Mrs. Florence Smith, Oshkosh. Another daughter, Mrs. May Smith, died here in 1922. Mrs. Worby also leaves two brothers, Schuyler Whitaker of Buena Vista and Warren Whitaker of Milwaukee in addition to 26 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Taylor came here three weeks ago because of her mother's serious illness.

Since girlhood Mrs. Worby had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and during her residence in Stevens Point was a member of St. Paul's M. E. church. She also was a member of the Women's Relief Corps, at Iola and later at Clintonville. She had a wide circle of friends here.

A short service will be conducted at the Vaughan home at 1 p. m. Saturday, with Rev. Carl Asmus officiating. The remains will then be taken to Iola, where services will be conducted by Rev. Mr. Asmus at the Methodist church at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will follow beside the remains of the late Mr. Worby in Riverside cemetery there.
