Auto Crash Claims Life of Edward “Jen” Carpenter

Funeral services for Edward Herman Carpenter, known by everyone in this area as “Jen” Carpenter, were held at 1:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Bauer Funeral Home in Weyauwega with the Rev. DeLoyd Huenink in charge.

Mr. Carpenter died late Saturday afternoon, Dec. 16, at Riverside Memorial Hospital, Waupaca, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident at the intersection of U.S. 10 and Country Trunk X just west of Weyauwega – about a block from his home at 416 West Main St.  He was 76 years of age.

The mishap occurred at about 4 p.m. Saturday as “Jen” was returning from Waupaca, where he had been visiting an old friend, Abe Rice.  Alone in his car, he collided almost head on with an auto traveling north on Highway 10 as he attempted to turn left onto County X.

He was pinned against the steering column by the impact and suffered crushing chest injuries.  Chief of Police Ken Thompson, first officer on the scene, and the Bauer ambulance attendants had difficulty in extricating him from the wreckage.  Thompson finally managed to break off the gear shift lever and twist the steering wheel enough to free him.  In addition to the chest injuries, both legs were broken and one was severely mangled.  Rushed to the hospital, he succumbed only moments after arriving there.

Gary J. Neidert, 16, Iola, driver of the other car, received a broken knee cap and facial lacerations.  His passenger, David Rouf, 14, also of Iola, received a severe bump on cut on the head as well as other

The Neidert boy had borrowed his father’s 1959 Ford to go to Sunset Curve to get parts for an older vehicle of is own, and they were on their way home when the accident occurred.  A witness said that the boys did not appear to be traveling at a high rate of speed and that they were unable to swerve into the opposite lane to avoid Carpenter’s auto because of oncoming traffic.

“Jen” was born Dec. 1, 1885, here in Weyauwega.  His parents were the late January Carpenter (from whom he had apparently derived his nickname) and Minnie Sieger.  He was never married.

With his twin brother, George, who survives him, “Jen” operated Carpenter Brothers Meat Market from 1917 until 1954, when they sold the business to Mr. And Mrs. John Meidl.  From 1910 until 1917 he operated a tavern in Weyauwega.

He was a member of F&AM Lodge, No. 82.  Masonic services were conducted on Monday evening at the funeral home.

Sine his retirement from business, “Jen” worked part time at Swede’s Bar.  He served as a director of the Waupaca County Agricultural Association (fall board) from 1936 until about 1954.  He was also active in the Democratic Party and greatly enjoyed following the fortunes of the Packers and big league baseball teams.

“Jen” will be buried at Oakwood Cemetery in the spring.  Honorary pall bearers were Abe Rice, Erich Sinsch, Lloyd Nelson, Howard Goetsch, G. G. Boermar, William Krueger, Gordon Melklejohn, sr., and Walter Raichke.

Survivors are his brother, George, of Weyauwega, with whom he made his home, and a sister, Mrs. Flora Lange of Fremont.  Two sisters and a brother preceded him in death.
