SAFE CRACKERS

The gang’s fourth annual visitation struck Ogdensburg last Thursday night and Irving Gray’s new fine fire proof safe was smashed or at least the door was blown off. If the culprits had stopped to look they could have saved the safe and themselves much trouble because there was a card on the door telling them it was not locked.  They “borrowed” tools from the blacksmith shop to drill the hole in the door.  A counter was smashed and the damages were probably over $100, but they found no money.  The merchants send all their cash to the big banks for safe keeping.  The same gang did not start and run away. They staid right around as innocent as lambs and on Saturday night went to New London and got a hand car and came back to Northport and cracked the safe in H. M. Tyler’s store, but the robbers got only a few coppers and nickels for their trouble; however they helped themselves to a lunch as was evident and then rode out of town.  The officials at Hortenville wired that two suspicious characters were there.  Under-sheriff Hess went there Monday but found one of the men had taken the pedestrian line back toward Dale and Weyauwega, where at the latter place he was held by Marshall Bellinger.  The other one had gone east.  When officer Hess arrived the man was turned over to him.  It proved to be William Conners who is well known as one of the men implicated in the train hold up a few years ago.  He has been around these parts off and on ever since.  Whenever there has been a safe cracking Conners has generally been seen in the vicinity but always with his innocent appearance.  He was placed under $300 bonds but preferred jail, pending an examination May 5.  Not having any plunder it may be hard to hold him although the officers may have some good evidence which may establish the fact that Conner was in it.
