Willard C. 'Bud' Szczodrowski

Willard C. "Bud" Szczodrowski, 81, Plainfield, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at St. Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Catholic Church in Plainfield, with Deacon Robert Precourt officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King.

Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. Thursday until the services.

The family requests donations to the American Heart and Diabetes associations in lieu of flowers.

Mr. Szczodrowski was born Oct. 15, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., a son of the late Frank and Helen (Dylla) Szczodrowski.

When he was 17 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II, followed by the Korean Conflict, where he served as a radio operator. He received a World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal Japan.

He was married to Mary Pawlarczyk on Sept. 2, 1950, in Chicago, Ill.

He had several businesses in Chicago, including the Hot Dog Wagons and a hot dog stand called "Bud's Dog Heaven." He retired at age 65 from 3M Co. in Nekoosa.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Wautoma.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Debby (Barry) Denham and Tammy (Ron) Bloch; one son, Jim; one sister, Dorothy (George) Salata; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Norma Trechel; one brother, Franklin; and one grandson.

Donald A. Ruehl Sr.

Donald A. Ruehl Sr., 82, 917 Illinois Ave., Stevens Point, a former Stevens Point assessor, died Monday, June 15, 2009, at Wellington Place in Stevens Point.

Private services were held. Burial will take place in Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery in King.

Memorials in his name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave. Fl 17, Chicago, IL 60601, in lieu of flowers.

Mr. Ruehl was born Nov. 29, 1926, in Milwaukee, a son of the late Herbert and Florence (Miller) Ruehl. He attended schools in Milwaukee, graduating from Wauwatosa High School.

He entered the service on Feb. 26, 1945, at Fort Sheridan, Ill. He served as a private first class in the Army Air Force. He received the Asiatic/Pacific Theater Ribbon, the Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 30, 1946, at Fort Sheridan, Ill.

He was married to Lois Lenz on Sept. 20, 1947, at St. Matthew Church in Wauwatosa.

He worked as an assessor and appraiser for various communities including Stevens Point, retiring in 1994.

When he was younger he signed a contract with a Philadelphia Phillies farm club.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald Jr. and Kevin (Beth), both of Stevens Point; one brother, Herbert T., Menomonie Falls; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Mrs. Helen E. Blaszkiewicz
 
Mrs. Helen E. Blaszkiewicz, 74, Milwaukee, a Stevens Point area native, died this morning at St. Mary's Hospital, Milwaukee, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Milwaukee. Burial will be in Veterans Cemetery, King.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday at the Franzen, Jung, Kaufmann and Weiand Funeral Home, Milwaukee. The general rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

Mrs. Blaszkiewicz was born Aug. 12, 1902, in the Town of Hull, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nicholaus Zurawski. She married Frank Blaskiewicz, in Stevens Point Ln 1921.

The couple operated the Hilltop Tavern from 1921 to 1953. They continued to live here until 1966, when they moved to Milwaukee. Mr. Blaskiewicz preceded her in death in 1972.

Survivors include three sons, Eugene, California, Frank Jr., Florida, and Norbert, California: three daughters, Mrs. Ann Sellhausen and Mrs. Lawrence (Lucille) Kielszewski, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Robert (Lorraine) Karch, Delafield: one brother, Victor Zurawski, 127 Green Ave.; six sisters, Sister Mary DeSales, CSSF, Polonia, Mrs. Theodore (Pauline) Hrcyna, Milwaukee, Mrs. John (Albina) Janick, 4220 Arbutus Lane, Mrs. Henry (Clara) Nisiewicz, Milwaukee, Mrs. Alois (Christine) Chojnacki, 5347 Hwy. 10, and Mrs, Emil (Agnes) Pavelski, Porter Road: 26 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Tressa Love

Mrs. Tressa Love, 82, 1926 Water St., died Sunday afternoon at home after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen's Catholic Church. The Rev. Thomas Mullen will officiate. Burial will be in Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery, King.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Boston Funeral Home. The American Legion Auxiliary, Berens-Scribner Unit 6, will hold a ritual at 7:30 p.m., and the Catholic Daughters of America wit] join with the general rosary at 8 p.m. She was a member of both groups.

A memorial fund has been established in her name for the Central Wisconsin Health Foundation.

Mrs. Love was born Nov. 27,1894, in Hewitt, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Roecklein. She grew up there and as a young woman worked as a saleswoman in Wisconsin and Marquette, Mich.

She married Frank Love on Nov. 25, 1923, in Green Bay. The couple settled in Stevens Point, and she worked as a retail saleswoman for many years, working last at Quality Store. She retired around 1967. Mr. Love died on May 17, 1969.

She was a member of St. Stephen's Church and its altar society.

Survivors include two sons, John A., Brookfield, and Patrick F., Harpersfield, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs, John (Catherine) Mosey, 1932 Briggs St., and Mrs. Terrill (Rosemarie) Menzel, Mason City, Iowa; one brother, John Roecklein, Marshfield; four sisters, Mrs. Cornelia Strupp, Milwaukee, Mrs. Walter (Ann) Koenig, Marshfield, Mrs. Phillip (Josephine) See, Spencer, and Mrs. George (Hattie) Atman, Mayville: 18 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Two sisters preceded her in death.

A former Stevens Point resident, John D. (Jack) Gerke, 56, Hayward, died Monday evening at a hospital in Hayward. Funeral arrangements are pending at Dzikoski Funeral Home.

Gerke services

Graveside services for John D. (Jack) Gerke of Hayward, a former Stevens Point resident, will be held Friday morning at 11 at the Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery, King.

Friends may call after 6 this evening at the Dzikoski Funeral Home.

Mr. Gerke, 56, died Monday evening at a Hayward hospital, where he had been a patient three days.

Born Aug. 22, 1921, in West Allis, he grew up there and entered military service July 25, 1940. He was a sergeant with the 330th Air Service Group and served in the Western Pacific and Asiatic-Pacific Theaters before his discharge Oct. 20,1945.

He was married Jan. 23,1943, in Milwaukee to Eve Anderson,

After World War II, he was employed as a consultant in sales promotion, sales management and marketing by the Miller Brewing Co., Milwaukee.

The Gerkes moved to Stevens Point in 1954 and he was self-employed in the same field,

Mr Gerke's wife died Sept. 21, 1968. He moved in 1971 to Hayward, where he continued his self-employment until his death.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Gary (Carole) Palmer, Hope, Idaho, three grandsons and three sisters.

James Van Wagenen

Van Wagenen dies; attorney, former judge

James H. Van Wagenen, who had a long and colorful career in law, the military and government, died early today at his home, 2608 Simonis St. He was 73.

He was a former Portage County judge and assistant district attorney and he practiced law until a few weeks ago.

He had been in ill health for several months.

Mr. Van Wagenen was a native of Madison. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison law school and began practicing law in Milwaukee in 1928.

He came to Stevens Point in 1938, practiced with Lyel N. Jenkins for about a year, and then opened his own office.

Mr. Van Wagenen was in the Army for five years during World War II, from October 1940 to October 1945. He left with the local National Guard units and later was assigned to military government.

He went overseas in February 1944, landed in Normandy shortly after D-Day and served in France and Germany through the end of the war in Europe, returning lo the United States in July 1945.

Among his decorations were the French Croix de Guerre with a gold star and the American Bronze Star.

Mr. Van Wagenen resumed his law practice after his discharge as a lieutenant colonel. In 1947, he helped reactivate the National Guard units here.

In 1950, he was appointed county judge by Gov. Oscar Rennebohm to succeed the late Byron J. Carpenter, and he held the office for a year.

From 1956 until 1975 he was assistant Portage County district attorney for welfare matters. This was a part-time position then, and he continued to practice law. His office in recent years was at 950 College Avenue.

Mr. Van Wagenen was a former president of the Portage County Bar Association. He had also served as chairman of the Portage County Republican Party and as chairman of the voluntary committee of the 7th District GOP.

He was the Republican nominee for district attorney of Portage County in 1940 but withdrew because he was called into service before the election.

Services for Mr. Van Wagenen

Funeral services for James H. Van Wagenen, 73, of 2608 Simonis St., will be held on Monday at 9:30 a .m. at St. Bronislava's Catholic Church at Plover. The Rev. Francis Przybylski will officiate. Burial will be made in the Wisconsin Veterans' Cemetery at King.

Mr. Van Wagenen, a lawyer, former Portage County judge and assistant district attorney, died early Friday at his home. He had been ill for the past several months.

Friends may call at the Boston Funeral Home after 2 p.m. on Sunday. The American Legion ritual will be conducted there at 7 o'clock Sunday evening, followed by the Elks ritual at 7:30. Mr. Van Wagenen was a member of Berens-Scribner Post No. 6, American Legion, and Elks Lodge No. 641.

A general rosary will be prayed at the funeral home at 8 o'clock Sunday evening.

A memorial has been established in his name for St. Bronislava's Church.

Mr. Van Wagenen was born at Madison on Dec. 23,1903, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Van Wagenen. He grew up in Madison and attended schools there. He received his bachelor of arts and bachelor of laws degrees at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and started the practice of law at Milwaukee in 1928. He came to Stevens Point in 1938 and had been in law practice here since except for active military service from 1940 until June 1945.

He married Mildred Krone at Hammond, Ind., in 1948, and she survives him. He is further survived by two sons, John, 1542 N. Skyline Dr., and Nick, at home; two sons and a daughter by a previous marriage, James H. Van Wagenen Jr., Wheaton, Ill., and Garrett Van Wagenen, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Margaret Heding, in Arizona, and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Mr. Van Wagenen was a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Wisconsin, the Portage County Bar Association, and the Retired Officers Association, as well as the local American Legion Post and the Elks Club, He also was a director of the County-City Credit Union.

Luke C. Matke, 64, 1600 Fremont St., died this morning at St. Michael's Hospital, where he had been a patient since being stricken at home Saturday.

Funeral services will he held 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The Rev. Leon Powell will officiate. Burial will be in the Veterans Cemetery, King.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel. Berens-Scribner Post No. 6, American Legion, will hold a ritual at 7 p.m., and the National Catholic Society of Foresters, St. John's Court No, 1807, will combine with the genera! rosary at 7:30 p.m. He was a member of both organizations.

Mr. Matke was born Sept. 7, 1913. in Stevens Point, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Matke. He attended local schools and began working for Joerns Furniture Co. in September 1929.

He worked there until joining the Army on May 13, 1942. He served in Naples, Foggia, Rome and Arno, Italy, and was discharged as a tech 5 on Sept. 28, 1945.

He returned to Stevens Point and worked for Joerns until retiring as a cabinetmaker on Jan, 5,1976.

Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Gilkay, 1600 Fremont St., Mrs. Magdalene Oilschlager, Port Edwards, Mrs. Glenn (Helen) Pike, 3532 Water St., and Mrs. Archie (Constance) Teske, Almond; and nieces and nephews.

Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Howard E. Dolce

Howard E. Dolce, 64, 7168 Moraine Valley Lane, Stevens Point, a retired SNE vice president and owner of a local printing company, died Sunday, July 29, 2007, at his home after being stricken with an apparent heart attack.
 
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Veterans Administration Cemetery in King.
 
Visitation will be at the funeral chapel from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and again from 9:30 a.m. Wednesday until the services.

Mr. Dolce was born Oct. 9, 1942, in Chicago, Ill., a son of the late Daniel and Bernice (Groot) Dolce. He graduated from St. Bede Academy in Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
 
After completing college he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was deployed in Germany.
 
He was married to Nancy Tindell on March 23, 1962, in Galena, Ill.
 
They lived in Dubuque, Iowa, for 10 years before moving to Stevens Point in 1977.
 
He was employed by SNE Corp., from which he retired as vice president of operations in 1999.
 
He and his wife are owners of Dolce Digital Imaging & Printing in Park Ridge, which was known as PIP Printing until 2000.
 
He was a member of the Stevens Point Country Club and the Elks Lodge.
 
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Tammy (Mark) Kozelek, Custer, and Penny Fuller, Antigo; two sons, Daniel, Austin, Texas, and Brett (Erin), Detroit, Mich.; and seven grandchildren.
 
He was also preceded in death by one sister.

Beverly A. Dupuis

Beverly A. Dupuis, 64, Stevens Point, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Stevens Point. A private family burial will take place in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King.
 
Visitation will be in the St. Faustina Room of the church from 9:30 a.m. Friday until the Mass.

Mrs. Dupuis was born Jan. 23, 1943, in Chicago, Ill., a daughter of Lorraine (Koeller) Netzel and the late David Netzel. She was a graduate of Holy Cross High School in Merrill.
 
She was married to Larry Dupuis on Aug. 11, 1962, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Wausau. He preceded her in death.
 
She worked for many years as a teacher's assistant at Mosinee Middle School before retiring.
 
She was an active member at St. Peter Catholic Church in Stevens Point.
 
Survivors include two sons, Michael (Svetlana Bekman), Evanston, Ill., and Thomas, Pine River; her mother, Lorraine Netzel, Stevens Point; one brother, Donald (Susan) Netzel, Stevens Point; and two grandsons.

Florence M. Fredrickson, 96, Waupaca, a former head cook at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King and the mother of a former Stevens Point resident, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, at Bethany Home in Waupaca.
 
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca, with the Rev. Dr. Charles Tews officiating. Interment will be in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King.
 
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. Monday until the service.
 
Mrs. Fredrickson was born Oct. 28, 1910, in Oconto, a daughter of the late Arthur and Lena (VanHulle) Windey.
 
She was married to Walter Fredrickson on April 14, 1936, in Waukegan, Ill. He died Aug. 15, 1944.
 
She was the head cook at the Wisconsin Veterans Home for more than 30 years.
 
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Waupaca.
 
Survivors include one daughter, Joan (James) Otterlee, Waupaca, formerly of Stevens Point; two sons, Miles W., King, and Gene A., Butte Des Morts; three sisters, Helen Crooks, Green Bay, Margaret Doyle, South Daytona Beach, Fla., and Marian Tappa, Waupaca; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
 
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Robert and Louis Windey; and two sisters, Cecile Routheau and Elizabeth Stromberg.

Evelyn M. Check, 87, King, a former Rosholt resident who was the long-time food service director at the Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King.
 
A private memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home-Ainsworth Hall Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Vanden Hogen officiating. Interment will be in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery at King.
 
Memorials are appreciated in lieu of flowers and can be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 8462, Chicago, IL 60680-8462 in her memory.
 
The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements.
 
Mrs. Check was born March 30, 1920, in Portage County, a daughter of the late Peter and Anna (Somers) Gavin.

She was married to Henry H. Check on Oct. 26, 1940, in Polonia.
 
She had been employed as the food service director at the Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt for many years.
 
She had been a member of the Nelson-Kaminski American Legion Auxiliary Unit 509 in Rosholt.
 
She became a resident of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King in November 1999.
 
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Barbara Zinda and Margaret (Paul) Larson, both of Rosholt; one brother, Vernon Gavin, Stevens Point; and five granddaughters.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Ben Gavin; and one sister, Emily Kurszewski.

He was a member of the New Life Assembly of God in Plainfield.
 
He also lived in Hancock and Wautoma before moving to the Veterans Home in King.
 
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Dreesen, Plainfield; two brothers, Orvel (Karen) and Dick (Dolores); one sister, Aleida Meyerhoff; numerous nieces and nephews; and six stepchildren, Brenda Baar, Virginia (Scott) Vancourt, Mary (Jeff) Kranish, Dale (Kimberly) Veley, David (Paula) Smith and Danny Smith.
 
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Grace; one daughter, Rose; one son, Ralph; and one sister, Anna Mae Green.

Mary T. Hansen, 84, Amherst, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, at Lakeview Manor in Weyauwega.
 
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church in Amherst, with the Rev. Dwight Anderson officiating. Interment of cremains will be in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King.
 
Visitation will be at Jungers-Holly Funeral Home in Amherst from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday until the service.

Mrs. Hansen was born Feb. 13, 1923, in Amherst, a daughter of the late Lee Edward and Mabel Tunis (Anderson) Guyant. She grew up in Amherst and attended Amherst High School, graduating in 1941.
 
She was married to Louis Glen Hansen on May 13, 1945, in Stevens Point. He died on March 8, 1998.
 
They farmed near Amherst until retiring in 1997.
 
She moved to Amherst in 2001.
 
She was a lifelong member of Peace Lutheran Church in Amherst and the Ladies Aid.
 
Survivors include seven sons, Larry L. (Linda), Okauchee, Timm G. (Rose), Bloomington, Minn., Samual D., Pasco, Wash., Charles J. (Karen), Plymouth, David B. and Randal L. (Peggy), both of Waupaca, and Mark J., Amherst; one daughter, Judy L. (Peter) Trzebiatowski, Grant Pass, Ore.; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
 
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Guyant and Lucille Lutz; and three brothers, Herbert "Norske" Guyant, Gerald "Socker" Guyant and Richard "Dick" Guyant.

Robert A. Drengberg, 71, Sturgeon Bay, a former Stevens Point resident, a former owner of the Unique Bar in downtown Stevens Point and the father of a Stevens Point woman, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at the Aspirus Hospice House in Wausau after a battle with cancer.
 
Services will be private and burial will be at the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King.

Mr. Drengberg was born May 3, 1936, in Chicago, Ill., a son of the late Alfred and Irene (Grasse) Drengberg. They later moved to Jacksonport in Door County where he attended local schools and graduated from Sevastopol High School in 1954.
 
He entered the United States Air Force in 1957 and was honorably discharged in October of 1962.
 
After the Air Force, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and graduated in 1966.
 
He was married to Mary Ann Repinski in 1964. They later divorced.
 
Early in his career, he was employed with Wausau Insurance in Nashville, Tenn., and later returned to Stevens Point where he and Mary Ann owned and operated The Unique Bar.
 
Most recently, he was employed as a real estate broker/associate in Sturgeon Bay, as well as a night auditor for the Stone Harbor Resort.
 
He was also involved in HAM radio.

Survivors include his ex-wife, Mary Ann, Stevens Point; one son, Peter, Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Tracy (Harris Helfand), Stevens Point, and Julie (Andrew) Bleser, Chicago, Ill.; one sister, Crystal (James) Barnard, Egg Harbor; one brother, Fred; and two grandsons.
 
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Charles.

Margaret K. Carey

Margaret K. Carey, 82, Waupaca, an Almond native and former Amherst resident, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, at Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca.
 
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Amherst United Methodist Church in Amherst, with the Rev. James Scott officiating. Interment of cremains will be in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King at a later date.
 
Memorial visitation will be held at the church from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the services.
 
Memorials can be made to the Amherst United Methodist Church Sunday School in lieu of flowers.

Mrs. Carey was born March 26, 1925, in Almond, a daughter of the late Adolph Fredrick and Ethel P. (Ward) Hetzel.
 
She was married to Kenneth Carey on Oct. 18, 1943, in Milwaukee.
 
She was a member of Amherst United Methodist Church in Amherst.
 
She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors of America, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Amherst United Methodist Women's Group.
 
Survivors include her husband, Waupaca; two sons, Dennis (Gwen), Wausau, and Scott, Amherst; three daughters, Caren (Robert) Mittelsteadt and Cindy (Donald) Maggio, both of Waupaca, and Janice (Dennis) Krusick, Wausau; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
 
She was also preceded in death by four brothers and one grandson.
