August 08, 192615. Notes for RANDINE NILSDATTER (LEE I U.S.): [from HISLOP.GED] Mrs. Matt (Randina) Rasmusson was born in Norway and came to Anthony community as a bride in 1886 and, together with her husband, shared the hardships and privations of the early pioneers. Mrs. Rasmusson, a charter member of the East Marsh River Ladies Aid, which she helped organize in 1886, held the distinction of having served as its president, vice president, or treasurer for a total of about twenty-five years. She gave generously of her time, talents and means in order that her beloved "Kvide Forening" might be able to suport the various mission projects which were always so close to her heart. She did beautiful sewing and embroidery work,, and in later years she always made her own contribution to the sale in the fall. After the death of her husband in 1926, she continued to live on the home farm with her son-in-law and daughter. Being rather hard of hearing for a number of years, her eyesight was good, so she spent much time reading especially her beloved Bible, devotional books and church papers, and praying for family, friends, pastor, congregation and Ladies Aid. Mrs. Rasmusson passed away at the family home, Dec 6, 1951. The day before (December 5) relatives, neighbors and friends had visited her on her 91st birthday. She dearly loved to be remembered in this way, although feeble, and greeted them all in her usual cheerful manner. The following day she slept away to be with her precious Savior. Mr. Rasmussen was born sixty years ago in Lebanon but for many year has resided in the town of Oconomowoc, where he had held several offices of honor and responsibility testifying to the firm place he ever held in the affection and trust of his fellow citizens. Just a few weeks ago he purchased a residence property on Oakwood Avenue and he and his family had moved to the city recently. Six children were born to them, Timon Norton, born October 24,1890, Alvin Myron, born January 14, 1893, Vilas Lenore, born February 15,1895, Carlyle Archibald, born June 17,1897, Rollin Abner, born June 12,1899, and me, Laurene Jennette, born October 16,1901. When my parents were first married, they lived on his father's farm. My grandparents fixed up the hen house for them. We always teased Tim and said he was born in a hen house. Next, Dad and Mother lived with Uncle Albert, who was a bachelor, until Dad's house was built. We always called Uncle Albert "Uncle Gibby". Dad was always on the school board and was also a justice of the peace. My mother died three weeks after I was born. That left Dad with a dairy farm, five little boys, eleven to two, and me. My grandmother took me until my aunt raised me with her children, but he raised all those little boys, baked the bread, sewed their shirts, and all. I don't know how he did it! Poor Rollin was only two. I presume the older boys had to take care of him. When I was ten he decided to remarry. Dad married the minister's daughter, Anna. They had taught Sunday school and sung in the choir at church. They were married in the parsonage on July 6,1911. Their daughter, Doris Helen Lucille, was born two years later. Her mother chose the name Doris, Dad chose Helen, and I chose Lucille, after my favorite doll! I was so pleased to have a little sister. I used to pull' her around in my wagon. She was such a bright little girl. She wanted to go to school with me, the year I taught country school, although she belonged in the Monterey school. She got permission to do so. Doris was a good student and never gave me any trouble. In fact, I never really had discipline problems, quite different from today. In those days children obeyed and respected their elders. I taught the year between my freshman and sophomore years at college. Dad was quite a cabinet maker. He made a fine desk for himself, a fine cherry china cabinet for Tim for a wedding gift with his own cherry wood and he made my mother a delicate, miniature dresser with drawers and carving. He ceremoniously gave it to me one time. I moved away, he sold the farm, and I did not get the dresser. It was very dear to me, as it contained a gold locket with my mother and father's picture and another one with some of my mother's brown hair. The dresser was all carved, too. He was a great dreamer and felt that you could do anything, if you really applied yourself. Dad had built a round barn and later wanted to extend his dairy herd, so he built a much bigger one, one hundred feet long, with the timber from our woods. Carlyle stayed on the farm, as he was the best worker, although he would have liked to have become a minister. Dad sold him forty acres of his farm, and Colly built a nice three-bedroom house on it and later married the Monterey schoolteacher. When Dad was sixty, he decided to sell the farm and move to Oconomowoc, as he had had a heart condition for twenty years. He bought an old house near Tim's but did not live through the summer. One night, after having gone out to dinner next door, he had a heart attack, and Tim couldn't even get there in time. He had been helping the "boys", as he called his sons, doing odd jobs and fixing things. I remember he built new steps from the kitchen for my brother, Dave. All of the boys lived in the part of town called "Little Norway", as it was near the Norwegian Lutheran church. Doris and her husband later built a fine house there, too. They later moved up north to Woodruff. I remember how Dad and my Uncle Nick used to argue about predestination and how he and his father-in-law, the Reverend 0. I. M. Wilhelmsen, used to argue about this. Dad would go out and get the encyclopedia to show he was right. Dad took a strong interest in politics. He was a great admirer of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and La Follete. Dad made me a sailor dress, and I remember I was fascinated watching him sew the white braid on the trim. Usually he sent to Montgomery Ward for my dresses. He taught me to play our old-fashioned organ. He had taught himself and played hymns. At night we sometimes played "Authors" and a geography game, naming a place with the next person naming a state, city, or river with the last letter of the last word. He bought us a croquet set that we greatly enjoyed. He made me a little wagon of wood; he even made the wheels of wood! He loved the circus and always took us when it came to town. He loved the buggy races at the state fair. He bought his first car, a Buick, when I was twelve years old. The only grandchild Dad got to see was Nat, Dave's son, who became a doctor. I had hoped he would get to see my baby, but that was not to be. Thirteen more grandchildren came after Dad's death. How he would have loved them all' I wish I could have shown Dad how much I admired and loved him. Perhaps he knew, for he was very wise. Olethe Gunderson, age 2 1, daughter of N. Gunderson and Anne Corfeldt. Severin had a store in Monterey before going to Ashippun. brother had a saloon in Monterey. THE STILL: Olaf Forsythe's hardware store was eventually replaced after the 1917 fire by moving the building used by Zion Church at Hwy. 67 and Hwy. O to this location at W2433 Oak St. Originally this was the community building in Old Ashippun before it was moved to the Hwy. 67 and Hwy. O location. Consequently this building represents a part of Old Ashippun incorporated into New Ashippun. Ellis Rasmussen built a house on the back. An addition to the south of the building provided an ice cream parlor and later was the post office. The Rasmussens had general merchandise such as groceries, dry goods, and crockery. Mr. Rasmussen died in 1931, and Mrs. Rasmussen sold her merchandise to William Schultz in 1932. He used this building until moving to the Maasch building at W2455 Oak St. Alfred Nelson made the store into a tavern which he ran until it was purchased by Berger Nelson. Berger, after finishing barber school in Milwaukee about 1926, came to Ashippun on the train with a friend who came from Ashippun. It is said that when Berger got off the train in Ashippun, he looked around and made the comment, "I think I should have stayed on the train". He did, however, spend the rest of his life here. He began barbering at Radtke's and after purchasing this building, ran the tavern and made the post office area into his barber shop. Berger and his family lived in the attached house. In the late 1940s, the tavern was rented to Lester (Happy) Herzberg and Lester Maasch. Wally and Landa Bender ran it for several years as the Knotty Pine Tavern. Berger Nelson ran the barber shop until his death in 1965. At times he was helped by his son, Richard, in the barber shop. Berger enjoyed the people of the community, and they respected him. He was concerned about others and often helped a worthy cause or someone in need. After Berger's death, Al Hoff barbered a short time. It was also known for a while as Bud's Barber Shop. Herman Kluewer used the barber shop as his book keeping and tax preparation office before moving to the bank building. The barber shop space is now part of the tavern. After Berger's death, the buildings were sold to Melvin and Arlene Voigt. The tavern was rented by Bud and Ramona Kautz before Nunzio and Nora Crish ran it as "Nunzio's" for several years. The buildings are owned by Bob Wilson. Wally and Marilyn Schwartz, who live at Alderly, run the tavern as "The Still" and the house is rental property. (Following per a book we wrote on the history of the T. of Ashippun.) A post office was established in New Ashippun in 1919. It was located in Rasmussen's grocery store which later became the barbershop in what is now the Still tavern at W2433 Oak St.. Ellis Rasmussen was the postmaster here until 1931. August 08, 1926 Notes for RANDINE NILSDATTER (LEE I U.S.): [from HISLOP.GED] Mrs.
