Waupaca, Waupaca County, Wisconsin
Transcribed and submitted by Paula Vaughan February 2001

WAUPACA - Population 3,500. An incorporated city and the judicial seat of Waupaca county, is located on the Waupaca River and on the Wisconsin Central Ry., 29 miles southeast of Stevens' Point, 130 northwest of Milwaukee, and 221 northeast of Chicago. The city is lighted by electricity, has water works, a well-equipped and efficient fire department, 8 churches, a fine public school system, telephone facilities, 2 banks, first-class hotels and 3 weekly newspapers, the Post, the Record and the Republican. The city is situated in the center of the great Wisconsin potato belt, the shipments during the season from here being over one million bushels. The chain of lakes 3 1/2 miles west of the city is one of Wisconsin's famed beauty spots, there being 16 lakes joined together. On their shores are hotels, numerous cottages and the Wisconsin Veterans' Home, which latter place is connected with the city-a distance of 5 miles-by electric railway. Three steamers make daily trips during the season and bass and pickerel fishing is excellent. Near these lakes are trout streams that are unexcelled. Four miles north of Waupaca is a fine deposit of granite, which has been placed on the market. Waupaca is a popular summer resort, having ample hotel accommodations, the charges being reasonable. Tel. W. U. Exp. National. A. M. Penney, postmaster.
