Waupaca, Waupaca County, Wisconsin
Transcribed and submitted by Paula Vaughan February 2001

WAUPACA - An incorporated city of 3,000 population, located on the Wisconsin Central Line in Waupaca County, of which it is the judicial seat, 29 miles southeast of Steven's Point, 47 northwest of Oshkosh, and 251 southeast of Minneapolis. The city has 6 churches, excellent schools, a private and 2 national banks, a commodious court house, 3 hotels, 2 planing mills, 2 flour mills, starch factory, woolen mill, cold storage warehouse, creamery, cigar factories, bottling works and other industries of minor importance. Three newspaper-Post, Record and Republican-are published. The city is situated in the center of the great Wisconsin potato belt, the shipments during the season from here being over one million bushels; surrounded by a splendid farming country, its people are becoming well-to-do through the potato and dairy interests. The chain of lakes 3 1/2 miles west of the city is one of Wisconsin's famed beauty spots, there being 16 lakes joined together. On their shores are 2 hotels, numerous cottages and the Wisconsin Veterans' Home. Three steamers make daily trips during the season, and bass and pickerel fishing is excellent. Near these lakes are trout streams that are unexcelled. Four miles north of Waupaca is a fine deposit of granite, which has been placed on the market. Waupaca is becoming a popular summer resort, having ample accommodations and charges being reasonable. Exp., Nation. Tel., W. U. Henry C. Numbrue, postmaster.
