From Wisconsin County Histories, Waupaca County Edited by John Ware 1917 Transcribed and submitted to the Waupaca County Website by Paula Vaughan January 2002 Return to Big Falls Page In 1887 A. W. Whitcomb built a sawmill and opened a store in the north half of what in now section 26 of Wyoming Township, and thus laid the foundation of the little Village of Big Falls, a station on the Chicago & Northwestern Railway. A couple of miles to the northeast, Leuthold & Holman also developed a productive granite quarry, building a spur track to the main line of the railroad. That was the commencement of an industry, which still promises well for the township. The natural deposits of granite are rich both in quantity and quality, and thus far two productive quarries have been opened. Much of the land, also, which has been stripped of its timber and which appeared to Mr. Leuthold, twenty-five years ago, as being neglected by Wisconsin husbandmen for more distant, but no better tracts, is being reclaimed from the "stumpage" class and being brought into the market. When thus made ready for the plow, the soil is strong and fertile. The village has a population of about 300 people, a good school attended by 100 pupils, three churches, several stores and a sawmill. Questions, suggestions or additions, please email me.
