Physician’s Report - For the year ending June 1933

Transcribed by Paula Vaughan October 2010

To the Honorable Board of Trustees of Waupaca County Asylum for the Chronic Insane:

In making my report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1933, I am pleased to state that the general sanitation of the place has been as near perfect as it is possible to have it in an institution of this kind. Not only good sanitation but the general welfare and comfort of the patients has been well cared for.

They have been well fed and clothed. Exercise has been carefully planned to conform to the patients needs and abi'ity. Those able to work have been given only such work as is mot suited to their strength and ability and at no time are they unduly crowded. Those unable to work and who are not wholly incapacitated are given milder forms of exercise inside and in the open air.

Reading, games and music are all employed for the benefit of the patients. Every effort has been made by the management to produce home like surrounding and cheerfulness.

While we have had no epidemics the last year, the mortality list has been above the average due in every instance, with two exceptions, to conditions existing before their admission to the asylum.

The mortality list is as follows:

Name Age Date Cause of Death
Alonzo Mead 84 12-13-32 Acute enteritis
Ruby Greene 73 4-1-33 Ruptured Hernia
Wilhelmine Braun 75 2-3-33 Uremia
Matilda Nyflot 56 4-3-33 Nephritis
John Smith 71 4-3-33 Myocarditis
Sam Abraham 82 5-29-33 Nephritis
Bert Calhoun 46 6-7-33 Exhaustion of Dementia
Frank Disanti 47 6-6-33 Nephritis
Karan Severtson 76 6-15-33 Diarhea
William Paap 73 6-20-33 Myocarditis
Clara Barge 79 6-27-33 Endocarditis

Another death that came as a severe shock to us was that of our highly esteemed trustee, Edward Ramm. A member of the original building committee and for many years a trustee. His interest in the institution was never dimmed and his counsels were always sincere, wise and valuable. He has gone but his good counsels will live long after him.

In closing I wish to thank your honorable board, superintendent, and matron for the helpful co-operation which I have always received from you.

Respectfully submitted,
E.H. JONES, Physician
