Waupaca County Asylum - Weyauwega, WI

Physician’s Report

Transcribed by Jean Spiegelberg July 2004

To the Honorable Board of Trustees of Waupaca County Insane Asylum

I hereby transmit my report for the year ending June 30, 1918.

I’m gratified to state that everything in my department has moved along very satisfactorily. We have had no epidemics or sickness due to unsanitary conditions. Existing sickness has been moderate in amount and severity and much of it largely due to conditions which brought them to the asylum in the first instance.

The surgery for the year has been very light, consisting mainly of slight contusions and lacerations. One case only of more severe injury when one of the patients climbed a tree to gather nuts and fell a considerable distance, striking on rock. He sustained a compound fracture of the arm which, however, made a very satisfactory recovery.

The mortality list for the year is as follows:

Name Age Cause of Death
Fred Brederman 43 Exhaustion of Dementia
Julia McAllister 49 Nephritis
Flora Taylor 43 Dilation of Heart
Charles Butolf 50 Diabetes
Frank Mathey 34 Paresis
Marie Sylvester 48 Exhaustion of Melancholia
Peter Daigle 72 Exhaustion of Dementia
Mary Anderson 67 Sudden Heart Failure
Mary Petrowski 26 Pulmonary Tuberculosis
Jennie Kettleson 37 Tuberculosis
Pauline Christiansen 67 Dropsy

Again I wish to commend the Superintendent and the Matron on their very excellent management of the institution. It would seem that nothing escapes their observations and attention that will in any way better the physical, social, or mental welfare of the patients. There has been a harmonious cooperation throughout the year with officers and employees which has materially added to the sum of their efforts. On the whole I wish to say that I consider the present sanitary, medical and surgical conditions excellent and that it is all reflected in general tranquil condition of the patients.

Respectfully submitted,
E. H. JONES
