From the Physician's Report
WAUPACA COUNTY ASYLUM FOR CHRONIC INSANE

Transcribed by Paula Vaughan  June 2003

To The Honorable Board of Trustees of Waupaca County Insane Asylum

I hereby submit my twelfth annual report as physician to the asylum. During the fiscal year just closed I have made one hundred and four visits to the institution and am pleased to state that I have always found a watchful supervision of the entire plant.

The general sanitary and hygienic conditions have been good and the physical and mental welfare of the patients has been carefully guarded.

There has been very little sickness of a preventable nature and less than usual of a surgical nature. Much of the sickness and all of the deaths have been caused by a continuation, or as a result of those conditions which first brought the patients to an asylum.

The mortuary list for the year is as follows:

Date of death Name Age Cause of death
Sept. 13 Nels Mueller age 48 Sudden heart failure
Oct. 27 Halvor Scornish age 54 Exhaustion of dementia
Oct. 18 Martin Krueger age 29 pulmonary embolism
Dec. 19 Jay Dewey age 40 geneal anasarca
Dec. 22 Oscar Beals age 70 hemiplegia
Dec. 26 Abram Crowell age 75 exhaustion of dementia
Feb. 2 Lena Preive age 46 exhaustion of dementia
Feb. 2 Jack Shea age 54 exhaustion of dementia
Feb. 16 August Kabella age 44 exhaustion of mania
Feb. 21 Peter Anderson age 63 sudden heart failure
Mar. 11 Nancy Dean age 75 purpura hemorrhagica

On account of the excellent management of the institution, I find but little as medical adviser to recommend. I believe, however, as a matter of good sanitation, the wards should be repainted.

Of still greater importance, perhaps, is the menace from fire. Our experience of last year, when the building was saved from complete destruction only by the valiant work of the Weyauwega Fire Department, demonstrated in the strongest possible manner, the inadequacy of our own fire protection and yet nothing has been done immediate and early attention and be properly corrected.

In closing, I wish to thank you Honorable Board, Superintendent, Matron and Employees for the valuable cooperation which I have always received in carrying out plans designed to maintain and improve the general welfare of the patients.

Respectfully submitted,
E. H. JONES, Physician
