From the Physician's Report
WAUPACA COUNTY ASYLUM FOR CHRONIC INSANE - 1909

To The Honorable Board of Trustees of Waupaca County Insane Asylum

GENTLEMAN: I beg leave to present herewith my seventh annual report of the medical department of the asylum for the fiscal year ending June thirtieth.

The general health has been fully up to the average and the mortality rate low. But very little sickness of a preventable nature has occurred and in every instance of whatever nature, where a fatal issue was not inevitable, a speedy recovery or otherwise satisfactory result was had. This most desirable condition of affairs was due in a large measure to the excellent sanitation of the institution, the careful supervision by superintendent and matron and the careful nursing given patients by those in charge.

Besides the more or less acute diseases which have occurred there are a large number of chronic cases requiring special care and attention. It has been very gratifying to know that these patients have had the burden of their gloom lightened by the advantages the asylum offers. Clean and wholesome food adapted by the patients’ needs; frequent bathing; clean clothes; rooms well heated, lighted and ventilated; exercise carefully planned for the individual requirements and nothing left undone to make things cherry and bright for the patient.

The mortality list for the year is as follows: Amos Hauver, age 78, died of uremia. Galen W. Case, aged 84, dies of nephritis. Olaf Anderson, age 66, died of exhaustion of melancholia. Clemons Bersvenson, age 75, died of burns. Stephen Kingston, age 31, died of sudden heart failure. Anton Gilbertson, aged 66, died of exhaustion of melancholia.

In a former report I the attention of your honorable board to the desirability of sunning porches. I crave permission to mention the subject again. We have patients too feeble to get out of doors and in inclement weather this number is much increased. It is in behalf of these patients that I make the appeal. The old, feeble and anemic would not only enjoy a sheltered porch by they would receive a lasting benefit worth many times the cost.

In closing I wish to express my appreciation of the co-operation and support that I have at all times received in my work.

Respectfully submitted,
E. H. Jones, Physician
